Pirate Romance is an accessory brand based in NYC. Hand crafted by designer Joi, each piece is unique and original to its design. In a short interview, I was able to get inside details on becoming apart of the Karmaloop brand, partnering up with Patricia Field and the expansion of Pirate Romance.
LOS – Defining Pirate Romance as “wearable art” influenced by color, geometric shapes and popular culture, what niche of the accessories brand set it apart from other brands?
Pirate Romance – My original platform of blending exclusivity with affordability. I’ve raised the quantity to 100 of each design, but it’s still limited edition. Also “wearable art” comes from being able to translate my vision and emotion into jewelry. I’m infatuated with triangles so that led to me translating that to the Obtuse and Finite pieces for example.
LOS – Recently having a piece picked up by Patricia Field to be placed in her New York flagship, how did this partnership develop?
PR – A friend of a friend of a friend! (Laughs) One of my models E Money is friends with an assistant buyer at Patricia Field. I asked her to mention my line to the buyer and get her email. I sent over my lookbook and proceeded to pursue it from there. Usually when I announce things I’ve already been working on them or pursuing them for months ahead of time.
LOS – Pirate Romance recently became apart of the Karmaloop brands. Why did you decide to join the Karmaloop family? Are there other online shops you look to become apart of?
PR – Karmaloop is the largest online retailer of streetwear domestically and internationally so I definitely wanted that audience as a businesswoman. On the designer side they have been known to launch and propel newer brands, and they’re not afraid of edge! Other online stores specifically, I’m looking at 80′s purple.
LOS – Recommended accessory piece for spring/summer?
PR – Anything by Pirate Romance! But I think one good bold accessory either through size, chunky or color, neon.
LOS – Expanding your brand, what can we look forward to?
PR – I’m launching my menswear line, Crimes Against Thugs, June 1st and then the women’s line, Mannekin (pronounced mannequin) in August.
