Reese Herrick, fashion stylist and art director is also the founder and Editor-in-Chief of CHAOS Magazine. We love CHAOS because it’s artistic, fashion and fun!

I was able to catch up with Reese and ask her a few questions…here’s what she had to say:

Where did the idea to create CHAOS Magazine come from?

I was always a lover of fashion and art from a very young age, and I knew that I wanted to some how be involved in the fashion industry. I attended the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where I received my BFA in Fashion Merchandising and Journalism.

I wanted to create a magazine that was more about the models and less about celebrities, as 99.9% of magazines today are.  I’ve always looked for something different, something more raw and more about the creative “newbies” and the models of the next generations, and thought to myself, maybe others out there are looking for that as well. I started out assisting the head stylist at Seventeen Magazine and then decided to start freelancing.

CHAOS started as an idea of mine, something I always wanted to do as I mentioned above. I love creating, so why not create a magazine different from all the rest? That’s just what I did. I started CHAOS back in December of 2008, while living and working in New York City. Now living back in San Francisco, California, my main focus is CHAOS Magazine.

Tell us more about CHAOS.

CHAOS Magazine is a quarterly Indie Fashion & Art Digital Publication. We focus on showcasing brilliant talent across the board with a keen eye for the modeling industries newcomers. We focus on edgy fashion editorials, raw photography with a bit of a vintage twist. CHAOS loves fashion editorials that tell a story rather than just images of a model; and the editorials we run need to inspire us.  When it comes to our articles 90% of them are done on an interview basis. We do this because personally meeting one on one, we feel brings our readers closer to the talent. The talent we interview can speak to our readers rather than having a writer who is imputing too much of their own opinion. We let the talent get their message across through our writers.

Who reads CHAOS Magazine?

The CHAOS reader is young, not necessarily by number but definitely by mind. Roughly 18-35 years of age. They are working in the fashion, music or art world, and if not, admire it and respect the industry greatly. They are fashion forward defining brand credibility and interested in pop culture, art and music. In simple terms we can say our readers are “The Cool Kids.”

What makes CHAOS so special?

We are located in San Francisco but most of our fashion editorials are shot in New York City and outside of the United States in places such as Spain, England, France, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia making us a very international publication. CHAOS is where you look for the new faces in fashion. We believe that the models are the ones who drive the fashion industry which is why we do a Model Watch every issue, where we give a voice to the models and let them talk about their drive to model, why they want it, the hardships, and their budding careers. We also focus on other talent that is fresh and dynamic in music and art. Our articles are thought provoking and inspiring to our readers and this is what makes CHAOS special.

Absolutely love the cover shot!! The photographer was able to capture beautiful stare of both the model and cat perfectly!! Love the creative style and artistic expression. Keep up the good work.

  2. Katie says:

The magazine is brilliant! The content in CHAOS is always fresh and new. It’s the breath of fresh air I’ve been waiting for in a fashion magazine.

  3. Suzy says:

The photography is incredible and the model and cat are beautiful, but the model is scary skinny! I was so enlightened by the new trend towards healthier, fit models that I am disappointed to see such an obviously starved girl grace the cover. She is gorgeous, but the focus immediately goes to the bones protruding from her back and arms :(

    • Liz says:

I don’t think the model is scary skinny and I saw the full editorial that shows her full body. She is young, and she is thin, when is that a reason to claim starvation? When I was in high school I was under weight but I did not have any kind of eating disorder, in fact I ate like a cow! I think it is very judgmental of you to assume the model is “starved” based on a photograph. To go a bit further, ballet dancers have bones protruding from their bodies, so are you saying every single ballet dancer out there is also starving?

  4. Jess says:

    Hey, thin is always in!
