There are those who say that style should invoke an emotion. Well what better emotion to invoke then sensuality. Nothing expresses or invokes sensuality more than a sexy outfit. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Celebrity Stylist and Designer, Sarah Wallner, who has built quite a career specializing in “Sexy”. Sarah has worked with countless celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton, Brooke Burke, Leann Tweeden and many others. Her work can be seen gracing the covers of such publications as Playboy, FHM, Oxygen, Stuff, Esquire and Flex & Fitness Rx just to name a few. Sarah is also the owner of online store Musotica.com where she sells her collection of swimsuits, lingerie, fitness wear, club wear, costumes, stockings, shoes and accessories.
LOS: Can you tell our readers a little bit on how you got started in styling/designing?
Sarah: I started Musotica.com and models started asking me to put together looks for them for photo shoots. Then slowly they started asking me to attend their shoots and help them get dressed. On one of the shoots I met Dan Peterson the photographer to Benchwarmer.com and he offered me a wardrobe/stylist position for all their shoots.
LOS: What made you decide to focus on the more “sexy” side of style?
Sarah: I started styling sexy for Benchwarmer.com and liked it. I am a conservative dresser myself and it gave me the opportunity to be creative in a way I was not in dressing myself.
LOS: How would you explain the difference between sexy and trashy?
Sarah: The difference is in the model. I try to find a medium and give the model a classy but sexy look. I always study the girl first. If a girl is trashy I dress her classy and it will give you a perfectly balanced look of sexy. If a girl is classy I will give her a little of trashy. I like a balanced sexy in all my looks.
LOS: The La Dolce Vita issue of Playboy was absolutely gorgeous. What was your inspiration for that shoot?
Sarah: I was born in Rome and lived the “Dolce Vita” myself. The inspiration came from living in Rome and watching people dress. It was the perfect opportunity to bring my Italian sense of style to an American icon like Pamela Anderson. The dress was put together by cutting one up and placing it with a matching corset. It turned out to be a fantastic day and cover.
LOS: The media sometimes creates competition amongst celebrities in who they believe to be sexier. A celebrity’s outfit has as much to do with this comparison as their physique. How has this competitive atmosphere influenced your business?
Sarah: I like competition and it makes me want to be always better at what I do. I think the girl makes the dress and not the dress the girl. I always dress the celebrity according to what her taste is and find a balance in style.
LOS: Can you tell our readers a little bit about Musotica.com and how it got started?
Sarah: I started selling on eBay and after I sold a lot I needed a new venue to sell. Musotica.com the name was actually created to start a music promotion company. However I found a new meaning in the name and thought it would be a great name for a clothing company. It means “Muse” and “Exotic” mixed together. It brought me good luck.
LOS: What is the hottest selling swimsuit at Musotica.com and why?
Sarah: The Pin Up Dress is our best seller because it is a one piece swim suit and a mini dress. It can be worn as either a mini dress or in the water. I like to create retro looks with a modern touch.
LOS: Any advice for our female viewers looking to spice things up on Valentine’s Day?
Sarah: I personally like Teddies for Valentines. It is the perfect occasion for a sheer or lace teddy. You can wear it in the bedroom or with jeans.
LOS: You once predicted that Crochet Swimwear would make a comeback. What convinced you of this bold prediction?
Sarah: I was working on a photo shoot and liked the Vogue cover of Halle Berry in a crochet one piece. Plus at that time, one pieces were very popular due to Paris Hilton Burger King commercial. So as a stylist and a store buyer I was looking for the perfect one piece. I started making crochet one pieces and later dresses and bikinis.
LOS: Can you tell us a little bit more about your work at benchwarmer.com?
Sarah: I started as a wardrobe/stylist and then moved on to producing the shoots. I not only dressed the girls but I also booked the girls and organized the shoots. I learned how to produce shoots and all that it entails.
LOS: What advise would you give aspiring stylists and designers looking to specialize in this area?
Sarah: Do it with style; it is not hard to make a sexy girl look sexy but it is a challenge to make her sexy and classy. I always style with respect towards women and make them look their best. Study the girl you are going to dress. As far as the business, it is not an easy business as most mainstream agencies do not have a category for “sexy Styling”, so you have to make your own place in the industry and fight for it.
