Askia Abdull is a wardrobe stylist based in Atlanta. Originally from San Diego, California, the young creative got his start in the industry by working with a local photographer named Raphael Simien. Developing his craft, his portfolio work showcases the concepts of range, creativity, and style. Here’s what the stylist had to say about his niche for wardrobe.
“I love fashion, it’s my life. I’m very realistic in the terms of what I’m wearing,” Abdull states as he begins his response to my prowling questions. “I like to go for a more simple look, but still eye catching. I just have fun with it.” When it comes to inspiration, the answer is everything. From animals to food, the stylist literally soaks it all in. The daily elements of life form the foundation to a seamless process. Knowing the ends and outs of a day of shooting, I asked Askia what’s a typical day of shooting like for him. “Shoots are crazy at times; I’m always doing a lot the week of. I love behind the scenes,” noting his somewhat shy persona, “not so much being in front of the camera. I love being on set even when I’m not styling.”
I continue the interview with a set of specific questions regarding personal style, future work, season’s must-haves and advice to others looking to break into the industry.
LOS: What’s your definition of style?
Askia: Style is a way of expressing yourself. My style is really all over the place. I’m really into vintage, 80′s and 90′s looks.
LOS: Who would you like to work with?
Askia: Laretta Houston, I was a big fan of hers before I started styling, her work is amazing. Others include Ty Xavier Weldon, Dimitri Feverier and Elvis Pedra to name a few.
LOS: What’s in the season for men and women?
Askia: I would say sandals, they’re really big right now; also the whole European look. For women, I love platforms and wedge heels. I would say everything is in. We make it work.
LOS: What advice would you have for other’s looking to break into the industry?
Askia: Network your ass off, know what you’re doing and do your best at all times; be yourself.
